How VAR has affected Arsenal in EPL this season

Arsenal controversially lost 1-0 to Newcastle United on Saturday evening which saw the Gunners drop 3 points in the title race after VAR decision in the first few minutes of the second half.VAR

Anthony Gordon’s goal was given after VAR checked for three possible errors in the build-up to the goal. VAR gave the goal after checking for a possible foul on Gabriel Magalhaes, whether Anthony Gordon was offside when he received the ball, and whether the ball went out of play before the goal.

VAR concluded that the goal certified all the above instances, but that doesn’t seem to go well with the majority of fans, especially Arsenal fans and their manager.

Arsenal have had a few of their games intervened by the Video Assistant Referee this season. In the short article, I will be taking a look at all the incidents, and how VAR has affected Arsenal’s games in total this season.

The Gunners have had 7 overturns by VAR in their games this season. the first came in a game against Man United in favor of the Gunners and the last VAR decision was against Newcastle United which was against them.

Against Chelsea away from home on the 21st of Oct. 2023, VAR awarded a Penalty against the Gunners for handball by William Saliba in the London Derby in the 11th minute of the game. The penalty was scored by Cole Palmer to give the Blues an early lead against the Gunners.

In the game against Sheffield United on the 28th of Oct. 2023, a Penalty was awarded in favor of the Gunners for a foul by Oliver Norwood on Vieira. Fabio Vieira buried the ball in the back of the net in the 84th minute of the game.

Then, finally was the incident against Newcastle United which saw Arsenal drop 3 crucial points in the title race after VAR awarded Anthony Gordon’s goal following a series of checks in the early minutes of the second half.

Arsenal although had that decision against them in the Premier League this season, have had more decisions in their favor than against them this season.
